Edmund McMillen Games Ranked
I like Edmund McMillen. Let’s rank his games (on Steam).
9. Coil
Price: Free
Platforms: PC
Steam Rating: 9/10
Coil is a great game, I won’t deny that. But compared to everything else Edmund’s made? It’s very mediocre. It also doesn’t help that it’s included in The Basement Collection. Edmund doesn’t even know why it’s on Steam. Get it if you like his stuff, considering it’s free, but if you already have The Basement Collection, don’t bother. Also, it takes like 5 minutes to beat. It’s fine.
8. The Legend of Bumbo
Price: $15
Platforms: PC
Steam Rating: 9/10
Well, this is odd. No one talks about this game at all, and for good reason. It’s a turn-based RPG where, to attack, you need to play on a match-four board. I hate match-four games. If you’re addicted to Candy Crush, maybe play this. It also ties into The Binding of Isaac, so that’s mildly cool. I think this game is just fine.
7. Gish
Price: $10
Platforms: PC
Steam Rating: 6/10
This entire game is weird. You play as a sentient ball of tar named Gish as you attempt to rescue your girlfriend, Brea. The movement is extremely odd, as jumping is near impossible with the limited movement. It’s better than Bumbo, but not by much. Also, weirdly enough, Edmund no longer has control over it. The new owner, for some reason, has disabled achievements, removed the level editor, and locked the game to the easiest difficulty. If you want to play it, set it to version 170. Just trust me.
6. Fingered
Price: $2
Platforms: PC
Steam Rating: 7/10
A very simplistic game where you execute a suspect based on the witness’s description of them. Not much else to say, it’s fairly fun, but there’s not much else to it.
5. The Binding of Isaac: Wrath of the Lamb
Price: $7
Platforms: PC
Steam Rating: 10/10
Now we’re getting into the good stuff. The Flash version of Isaac is very good, but if you have Rebirth, I would suggest not bothering with this one. It’s very similar, but with a worse artstyle, less content, framerate issues, and, worst of all, keyboard controls. But for a Flash game? This is great.
4. The Basement Collection
Price: $3
Platforms: PC
Steam Rating: 9/10
This is a collection of Edmund’s flash games, and it’s great! It contains a frick ton of games, plus two comics he wrote, plus old and new drawings he made, plus even more bonus content, like interviews and prototypes! There’s so much content in this! Pick it up, it’s well worth the $3.
3. Super Meat Boy
Price: $15
Platforms: Xbox 360, PC, PS4, PS Vita, Wii U, Switch
Steam Rating: 9/10
Here it is: arguably Edmund’s most famous game, and for good reason. Meat Boy is a fantastic, tough-as-nails platformer that almost never feels like it’s being unfair. It’s got great, bite-sized levels that are easy to digest. If you haven’t already played this game, do it now!
2. The End Is Nigh
Price: $15
Platforms: Switch, PS4, PC
Steam Rating: 9/10
Here it is, in my opinion, Edmund’s most underrated game. I feel like The End Is Nigh is everything Meat Boy is, but better. It’s still got the bite-sized levels, but they’re interconnected in more unique worlds. Plus, it’s got an actual plot. And then there’s the music. HOLY FRICK THE MUSIC. It’s genuinely one of my favorite video game soundtracks.
1. The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+
Price: $35
Platforms: PC, PS4, PS Vita, Wii U, 3DS, Xbox One, IOS, Switch
Steam Rating: 10/10
This is the best game Edmund’s made. There’s no questioning about it. It’s practically the definite roguelike in every way. Just play it. Please.
